Westco was founded in 1991 out of innovation and common sense that allowed us to meet the fencing needs of local farmers during brutal prairie winters conditions. Today we are a full-service design-build company utilizing state of the art resources and expertise across multiple industries. Our steady growth since 1991 is a testament to what we do, the quality of our people and trust of our customers.

President

Derek O’Connor​

Derek O’Connor is a seasoned business leader and the current President of Westco Construction. With an impressive career spanning over three decades, Derek co-founded Westco Construction in 1991, starting out as a fencing company. Throughout the years, he has been involved in every facet of the business, gradually climbing the ranks to his present position as President.

Derek’s expertise lies in his extensive knowledge of all aspects of the construction industry. From financial management to building construction and design, he possesses a comprehensive understanding of the business. His diverse skill set includes experience as a welder and journeyman ironworker, which has greatly contributed to his profound understanding of the construction field. Over the years, Derek has cultivated a deep appreciation for the company culture at Westco Construction and cherishes the opportunity to collaborate with exceptional individuals in the industry, having had the pleasure of working with some truly remarkable professionals throughout his career.

Principal/Sales

Theo Van Ee

Theo Van Ee is a highly experienced and accomplished professional in the construction industry, currently serving as the Principal at Westco Construction. With a strong entrepreneurial spirit, he co-founded the company in 1991, initially specializing in fencing services. Over the years, Theo’s dedication and hands-on approach have propelled him to his current role as Principal, where he brings his comprehensive expertise in all aspects of building construction and design. From his early days as a welder and journeyman metal system erector to his proficiency in engineering and drafting, Theo’s diverse skill set has been instrumental in the success of Westco Construction.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field, Theo Van Ee was honored with the prestigious Cranbrook Ford design award in 2012. Throughout his career, he has cultivated a deep appreciation for the company culture at Westco Construction and has had the privilege of collaborating with exceptional individuals. Theo takes great satisfaction in meeting and working with talented professionals, and his commitment to fostering positive working relationships has been a cornerstone of his success. With his extensive knowledge and passion for the construction industry, Theo continues to drive Westco Construction forward, ensuring excellence in every project undertaken by the company.

GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Van Ee

Jason is an accomplished professional with a diverse background in the construction industry. Jason’s journey started as an ironworker, where he honed his skills and craftmanship. His dedication and commitment led to him becoming a certified journeyman ironworker in 2005, a testament to his expertise in the trade. Building on this foundation, Jason transitioned into roles such as site supervisor, project manager, and sales, demonstrating his versatility and ability to adapt to different responsibilities. Jason currently serves as General Manager of Westco Construction.

With over 20 years of experience, Jason has been exposed to a wide range of building types and construction techniques. His extensive knowledge allows him to approach projects from a well-rounded perspective, ensuring efficient and high-quality results. Additionally, he possesses excellent negotiating skills and a passion for team building, creating a cohesive and motivated workforce at Westco.

What Jason appreciates most about Westco is the company’s longstanding presence in his life. Having been with Westco for 20 years, he considers it his home. He takes pride in witnessing the company’s growth and being an integral part of its journey. One of the aspects that truly sets Westco apart, according to Jason, is the exceptional work life balance if offers. The company understands the importance of employees’ well-being and ensures that they have a supportive environment where they can thrive both personally and professionally.

Jason’s leadership, combined with his dedication to innovation and creating a positive work environment, continues to drive Westco’s success in the construction industry.

OPERATIONS MANAGER

Marty Van Ee

Marty joined Westco in August 2007 as a laborer and worked his way up through various roles, including Site Foreman, Site Superintendent, Construction Manager and now Operations Manager. His hands-on experience in building construction and design, combined with certifications as a metal building systems erector and insulated metal panel installer, has given him specialized expertise in managing complex projects. In December 2024, Marty transitioned into the role of Operations Manager, where he now focuses on optimizing project execution, improving efficiency, and fostering collaboration across teams.

Recognized as Alberta’s top apprentice in 2013, Marty has always been dedicated to excellence in his craft. While he takes pride in his technical achievements, he is equally passionate about Westco’s company culture and the values that drive teamwork and mutual respect. He believes in providing equal opportunities for all employees and works to create an environment where people can grow and succeed together.

With a strong problem-solving mindset, Marty enjoys tackling construction challenges and developing creative solutions that meet clients’ needs. His leadership ensures that Westco continues to deliver high-quality projects on time and within budget, reinforcing the company’s reputation for integrity, professionalism, and outstanding service.

Director of Project Management

Colin Prather

Colin Prather is the Director of Project Management at Westco, bringing over 39 years of experience in the construction industry. Previously, he spent 12 years at Makloc Construction, where he held roles as a Project Manager and General Manager. His extensive background also includes 4 years as a Construction Foreman at Greenland Nurseries, 7 years at Creative Door Services, excelling in Commercial/Industrial Sales and Project Management, 3 years as Operations Manager at RCR Construction and Management and 9 months as Operations Manager at Cherrywood Homes Master Builder. Colin has completed numerous construction management courses and specialized training in metal building systems design, showcasing his commitment to continuous learning and staying at the forefront of industry practices.

With a P.GSC (Professional Gold Seal Certified) designation from the Canadian Construction Association, Colin’s expertise, professionalism, and dedication are recognized in the field. In joining Westco, he has found a workplace that values collaboration, professionalism, and a customer-centric approach. Colin appreciates the exceptional team at Westco, where everyone shows up daily, puts in a solid effort, and strives to exceed client expectations. This commitment has resulted in along list of satisfied long-term clients.

As the Director of Project Management, Colin leads his team at Westco to deliver projects of the highest quality, on time, and within budget. His extensive experience, continuous learning, and passion for excellence ensure that every project is managed efficiently and meets the highest standards. Controller

John McKay

John McKay is an accomplished professional currently serving as the Controller at Westco Construction. Since starting with Westco in 2023, John has continued to make a significant impact on the organization’s financial operations.

John holds a Bachelor of Management degree, which has equipped him with a solid foundation in business principles and practices. In 2002, he earned the prestigious CPA-CMA designation, demonstrating his expertise in accounting and financial management.

One of the key reasons John enjoys working at Westco Construction is the exceptional work culture fostered by the company. He deeply appreciates the warm and supportive environment, where everyone is valued and treated like family. This inclusive and collaborative atmosphere encourages teamwork and allows John to thrive in his role as Controller.

With his extensive knowledge and experience in finance and accounting, John efficiently oversees the financial activities at Westco Construction. His attention to detail, analytical mindset, and strategic thinking contribute to the company’s success by ensuring accurate financial reporting, effective budgeting, and efficient cost management.

Director of Business Development

Daniel Worthington

Born into a construction family and raised on the job site, Daniel Worthington is a second-generation builder who has always found purpose and satisfaction in the construction industry. His journey began in 1991, spending summers shoveling gravel and tying rebar for his family’s company, Worthington Construction Ltd., in Standard, Alberta. From those early days, he gained a deep appreciation for how connected builders are to the people and businesses that shape our communities.

After years of seasonal work between school, ski hills, and travel, Daniel committed full-time to construction in 2002. He earned his Red Seal Journeyman certification while working with Clark Builders in Edmonton in 2003, and went on to own and operate Concrete Possibilities, a residential decorative concrete company, for eight years.

Daniel continued to grow his leadership and project expertise with Lorac Construction, serving first as a Site Superintendent and then as a Project Manager and Estimator for a total of eight years. In late 2020, he relocated to Lethbridge to take on the role of On-Site Project Manager for the Red Crow Community College Project with Clark Builders.

Daniel joined Westco Construction in November 2022 as an Estimator and, in March 2025, was named Director of Business Development. With decades of hands-on experience and a deep-rooted passion for construction, Daniel brings both strategic insight and community-minded leadership to his role at Westco

CONSTRUCTION MANAGER

Darren Slomp

Darren joined Westco in 2009 and has built a successful career at Westco, progressing through various roles, including Site Supervisor and Field Operations Manager. A Journeyman Red Seal Carpenter, he brings extensive hands-on experience and technical expertise to every project. In December 2024, Darren stepped into the role of Construction Manager, where he now oversees project execution, team coordination, and ensures that Westco’s high standards are met on every job site.

With a deep understanding of construction processes, systems, and efficiency, Darren is committed to streamlining operations and maximizing productivity. His ability to anticipate challenges, implement practical solutions, and mentor his team has made him a respected leader in the company. He thrives in the fast-paced construction environment and takes pride in delivering projects that meet and exceed client expectations.

Darren’s leadership style is rooted in collaboration and a strong work ethic. He values teamwork, open communication, and continuous improvement, ensuring that Westco remains at the forefront of the industry. His dedication to quality and efficiency plays a key role in maintaining Westco’s reputation for excellence in construction.
